Cultural Digital #044 - experienced
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week's there's all sorts of AR, VR, and immersive audiovisual things to enjoy. There's a few new creative tools, and various odds and ends. First up…
BlokDust "lets users create music, instruments and sound-art right in the browser, in an intuitive visual way". It's a collaboration between Luke Twyman (@whitevinylUK), Luke Phillips (@lukephills) and Edward Silverton (@edsilv).

METRO is "a lab where New York's libraries and archives come together to learn, share ideas, and collaborate on digital initiatives". They asked their members "to submit challenges or problems of practice that are informed by their experience and daily operations" and here's the list.
Great stuff - when these things are out in the open then they can be picked over, discussed, and some of them could perhaps even be fixed.
Experiences
Deprogrammed is an "interactive experience that invites you to step into the mindset of individuals who were indoctrinated into cults or extremist groups".
The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks. This is from Google Arts & Culture. "Follow rangers on an immersive adventure through five National Parks. Rappel into a crevasse, fly with thousands of bats, soar over an active volcano, dive through shipwrecks, and experience the Milky Way in 360° video and ambisonic audio".
Ghosts, Toast and The Things Unsaid is from Google’s Creative Lab and theatre company Sandpit. "The play features special mobile audio technology which allows the audience to ‘tune in’ to the inner thoughts of the actors as they pan around a 360-degree set".
NIGHT FALL - First Virtual Reality Ballet in the World (360°). This is from the Dutch National Ballet. Does 360° video count as virtual reality when you're a static, passive observer? Anyway, here's some behind the scenes info (in Dutch).
Augmented Museums. A nice primer on AR from the Mahuki Innovation Hub at Te Papa with lots of examples.
Digital tools
Graffiti 3D by jscottk enables you to "doodle in 3d space with 3d meshes in colors/materials of your choice. An Oculus Rift and Leap Motion are recommended for the best experience".
Bruce Shapiro uses motion control to make art. Here's what he uses to do that.
Odds and ends
What you need to know before making a mobile experience. Lindsey Green rounds up what Frankly, Green + Webb have learned over the years. Their weekly newsletter is good, by the way.

Mapping the Fossils' Collection "This website is an experiment built and ran by the Museum of Manchester and the School of Computer Science both from the University of Manchester".
An Introduction to the International Image Interoperability Framework. If you work with an online collection then this is for you.

If this newsletter ever comes out later than intended (like this week) it's because I'm busy working with really good cultural organisations on projects involving digital analytics, user testing, optimisation and all sorts of other things. Visit One Further for more on that.
