Cultural Digital #052 - jetpacks
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week there are more updates from recent conferences, plus VR, some new-to-me digital fundraising tools, and collections-related posts. First up, this from SBS…
I could have used a much nicer screenshot for My Grandmother’s Lingo, but I wouldn't want to ruin it for you. It's an "interactive online animation that uses voice-activated gaming to unlock the story of Angelina Joshua, a young Indigenous Australian fighting to preserve her endangered language, Marra" and it's really nicely done.

From the conferences
People still publishing things following MCN 2016:
Liz Filardi posted her round-up: Innovation, The Mission, and The Business: Frameworks for Institutional Success at Museum Tech Conference.
Mark McKay has posted his Key Take Aways.
Slides from the talk about the Results from the National Visitor Motivation Survey Online. I like lots about this, although (and this is only cos it's my specialist area), I have some reservations about the choice of website metrics. Also the pie charts make it hard to make comparisons here Arrays - Visitor Motivation Survey. Anyway, I like this.
AMT Lab with 10 Truths From Boot Camp to Spark Your Digital Revolution and their Key Takeaways From the Weird Reality Conference.
Lucy Paterson at ACMI with a recording of her Online shop talk at Let’s Get Real Conference. "It’s a more detailed version of the post from back in May and includes key challenges and tips for success for museums large and small embarking on a similar journey".
Virtual reality
POSTmatter - Dance with the virtual version of yourself "Preview the VR technology that is transforming the way we experience our own body, developed by the new Rambert Dance Company residents:
Virtually Real is an upcoming exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. "Graduates Adham Faramawy and Elliot Dodd, together with third-year student Jessy Jetpacks, have been selected to create works of art using HTC Vive. This virtual reality technology lets you experience hundreds of simulated worlds, where the normal rules of gravity don’t apply".
ImmerseUK is "a new cross-sector network for businesses and research organisations across all parts of the UK economy that are interested in the way that augmented and virtual reality can help drive productivity, social and economic growth". The National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company are members.
Collections
How The Digital Customer Experience is Transforming Museums gives a fairly broad overview, but a few of the examples used were new to me.
Can digital publishing change the way people experience museums and their collections? Culture24 are launching a new thing. This post shows some of the thinking around its development.
Linking collections – aiding discovery through Europeana. James Morley says: "Having worked for two years at Europeana, but now working for Imperial War Museums, a data provider, I wanted to ask the question: What can data providers get back from Europeana, both for themselves and for their users?"
Digital fundraising
The Royal Institution are using a platform called Zaffo to raffle Christmas Lecture tickets. The Royal Court used GalaBid for an online action ahead of their 60th anniversary bash.
And because it fits here, here's something I wrote recently about 'donate' buttons and the importance of context.
New websites
Schönbrunn Palace, Waddesdon.
Events
23 Nov, London: Generating music and images with deep learning
18-19 Jan, London: REMIX
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs up for grabs at Spotlight and THSH Birmingham.
Thanks as always for reading, please forward this on to anyone you think might find it useful, and have an excellent week.

I work with lots of really good cultural organisations on projects involving digital analytics, user testing, and all sorts of other related things. Visit One Further for more on that.
