Cultural Digital newsletter #59 - lowering the tone
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week there's quite a lot of strategy and data talk, with a few examples of technology being taken into the creative process. Here's an example of the latter…
Archan Nair is an artists with lots of personal and big brand work under his belt. He's been trying out 360 degree artworks and posting them on Facebook.
The power of applied data for museums I liked this one. It's a quick overview of efforts at the Art Institute of Chicago in applying "data and analytics to decision-making across all areas of our organization".
National Portrait Gallery Digital Strategy (PDF). Commissioned by the gallery, written by Oliver Vickers-Harris, with input from various others, and now published publicly for your enjoyment.
Lowering the tone: doing social media at Bodleian Libraries. A good read from Adam Koszary.
Nothing from the British Museum for ages, and then all of this at once:
Welcome to the new British Museum blog "Chris Michaels, Head of Digital and Publishing, introduces our refreshed British Museum blog, and discusses the role of the blog as part of our digital strategy".
Looking ahead. From the Arts Marketing Association "Kate Carter, Senior Marketing Manager: Digital at The British Museum shares her involvement as a Digital Marketing Academy Fellow".
Cultural Heritage Spotlight: Q&A with Daniel Pett from the British Museum (Part 1) This from the Sketchfab blog about efforts to "make the collections of the British Museum accessible for anyone in 3D and VR".
On that last one, Sketchfab have a whole culturalspotlight category on their blog.
The LSO mo-capped Sir Simon Rattle for their new visual identity.
ZipScene Magazine have a conversation with Katie Day (founder and artistic director of The Other Way Works company) about her latest productions and why is important for her to work with new technology tools.
ZipScene Magazine is run by Ágnes Bakk and it covers "new technologies-performance-game design-interactivity and emerging practices".
YOLOCAUST (possibly NSFW) This is "a project by Israeli satirist and author Shahak Shapira that explores our commemorative culture by combining selfies from the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin with footage from Nazi extermination camps. The selfies were found on Facebook, Instagram, Tinder and Grindr. Comments, hashtags and "Likes" that were posted with the selfies are also included".
New websites
Barack Obama Presidential Library, Discovery Place Science, Donmar Warehouse, The London Loom.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs up for grabs at The National Archives and Imperial War Museum.
Events
21-22 Feb, London: Science Museum London Digital Lab Hackathon (sold out, but including it so you know about it)
Thanks everyone. Please pass this on to others if you think they'll get something out of it.
Lastly, in the past week I met a couple of people who read this email. Hello again, and thanks for saying nice things about it!

I work with lots of really good cultural organisations on projects involving digital analytics and user research. Visit One Further for more on that.
