Cultural Digital newsletter #73 - clever shoes
Cultural Digital
Hello
Lots of museum stuff this week (how come the performing arts crowd don't talk to/about themselves so much?) but with some clever shoes, intelligent machines, and some exciting(?) policy stuff too.
Orphe is described as 'smart-footwear for artists and performers'. The shoes have lights and sensors in them and those outputs and inputs can be connected to all sorts of other systems - VR applications, external lighting rigs, iPhone apps… you name it.
Museums and the Web happened. Here are 10 key takeaways from Conxa Rodà of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Plus a couple of things that caught my eye:
Dana Allen-Greil tweeted this pic saying "I've never seen an org chart that also visualizes all of the vendors/systems you manage. Really shows scope of responsibility"
Sides from the Royal Academy of Arts' Digital Content Strategy, Lightning talk (PDF). They won a very well-deserved award for the work they've done around that strategy.
In other museum conference new, the deadline for proposals for the MCG's Museums+Tech 2017 conference has been extended to Weds 3 May.
Evaluating Dawn Chorus. Some lessons learned from the Carnegie Museums and their recent iOS app.
Collaborating with intelligent machines – Intersections: Art and Digital Creativity in the UK "Artists are starting to explore this emergent relationship and ask questions about the role of intelligent machines in art, and about the implications of how intelligent machines are being incorporated into our lives. This artistic activity is not only being created from within the artworld; tech companies are initiating collaboration with artists too".
Knight Foundation Grant To Support Museum Innovation At NEW INC "With Knight funding, the New Museum will expand the program to seek participants focused on the experimentation, development and adoption of new technologies that attract audiences to museums and engage visitors within the museum space".
Built To Past: Floppy Disk And VHS Art Need Creative Conservation An interview with Kate Moomaw from the Denver Art Museum.
What Does Data Have to Do with It? – Digital @ MoMA "As the spring 2017 intern in the department of Digital Media at MoMA, my goal has been to try to answer to the rather exciting question: “how should we integrate digital analytics into our work?”"
In the UK, DCMS released their Tailored Review of Arts Council England April 2017. Here are a couple of the digital-related recommendations:
12. The Arts Council should set much more stretching targets for NPOs to increase their digital content and encourage their audiences to access that content. Progress should be robustly monitored, and reporting from NPOs should be compulsory.
13. The Arts Council should work closely with DCMS and partners across the cultural sectors on the Digital Culture Project on issues such as:
collaborations and partnerships around cultural content – both digitisation of collections and aggregation of
online cultural content and new ‘born digital’
developing the sector’s digital capabilities including in intellectual property, data usage, digital leadership and sharing best practice
driving wider participation through digital engagement, distribution and content
research and evidence
Finally, in case you didn't see it, this from the London Symphony Orchestra on Twitter is worth your attention.
