Cultural Digital newsletter #74 - message from the unseen world
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week I've actually managed to bundle links into their own little categories (shout out to Thomas Cott - I have no idea how he managed it for so long). So we've got some people telling stories in new ways, others sharing how collections can be shared, plus some commercial art world stuff, and opportunities for clever artists to do their thing.
The piece below, which can be found under the Bishop’s Bridge Road flyover, commemorates Alan Turing. It was curated by Futurecity and devised by United Visual Artists, in collaboration with Hackney-based poet Nick Drake.
Narrative and storytelling
Monitor: a smart home narrative "Recently police in Arkansas issued a warrant for Amazon Alexa data in connection with a suspected homicide. Though the request was denied, this artwork acts as if it was accepted, using 'smart home' notifications to extrapolate from the evening's events: a few friends, a few drinks, a floating body".
DI Sleet is an Instagram-based whodunnit thing related to BBC Three's Murder in Successville. "A celebrity's been bloody murdered. You need to solve it. Follow each step to gather clues and nail the culprit".
Make it your hone: the ebook that you are forced to edit as you read "Tea Uglow’s story about a disintegrating life has been built to be literally deconstructed, with readers required to make small edits to the book’s text, as it passes from one owner to the next".
Doing things with collections
New MAAS Online Collection: The Techie Stuff. Don't worry, it's not too techie.
An Introduction to IIIF. From Tom Crane at Digirati.
Creations of Entries Rijksstudio Award 2017. Things people have made with the Rijksmuseum's collections.
From the art world
Nowhere to hide: new tool brings technical firepower to the fight against fraudsters "Proprietary screening software will trawl the dark web for fakes and unauthorised copies sold online".
How Big Is the Online Art Market? Depends Who You Ask. "Despite a relative slowdown in the global art market, the online art market grew by 15 percent, to $3.75 billion, last year".
