Cultural Digital newsletter #82 - look at what you can do
Cultural Digital
Hello
I'm typing this while listening to tunes from radio stations I've found via Radio Garden. After every few songs I'll drag the globe round a bit and get something new. I'm currently in Paris. Let's see where I am by the end.
Making Contact: Digital experiments with visitor donations. Yet more lovely, detailed project documentation shared by National Museums Scotland.
The Spektrix Benchmark Report. "The team here have been doing some digging around in the data of the 300+ organisations using Spektrix and found some things that we think you might be interested in".
The data section
Visualizing Visions. Exploring the Rijksmuseum dataset.
Most popular techno & house DJs played at Berghain. "I ended up analyzing the listings from the last 7 years in Berghain, Panorama Bar, Lab.oratory and Säule to find out who are the most booked DJs, who is trending and lots of other super-interesting data".
The 'wow, look at what you can do these days' section
Take On Me, the AR version. This uses ARKit, which I'd not really paid much attention to, but it's the augmented reality framework coming soon to iPhones and iPads.
Tech That Makes the President into a Lip-Synching Puppet. "The animated gif that you see above? That’s not actually Barack Obama speaking. It’s a synthesized video of Obama, made to appear as though he’s speaking words that were actually inputted from an audio file".
Other bits and pieces
Micro but Many. An online Micro Machines collection.
Playcraft Live is happening on 14 October 2017. "The play will be split between the performances of actors on stage and avatars in Minecraft, with the whole production mixed into a single livestream for all audiences. Characters will slip between the physical world on stage, and the in-game virtual world, which will take them into scenes set across Earth".
History of Microsoft Paint 1985 - 2017 "As of July 2017, Microsoft is halting development on the venerable MS Paint. What better time to take a look back at the history and legacy of Paint, Windows 3.1 Paintbrush, and ZSoft PC Paintbrush!"
Nonprofit transforms vacant auto-repair garage into an incubator for podcasts. That'll be the Podcast Garage just outside of Boston.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at the BFI, Young Vic, RAF Museum, and Royal Institution.
Thanks for reading, and please do share this email and/or any of the links above with people you think might be deserving.
Cheers

PS. I'm now in Donetsk (radio station-wise).
When not writing emails like this, I run a digital analytics and user research consultancy called One Further, working with some truly excellent cultural organisations.
