Cultural Digital newsletter #99
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week’s email has been slightly delayed by a pesky appendix. Gawd bless the NHS (and codeine). Still, the show must go on…
How Generative Music Works is a presentation by Tero Parviainen and it is great. I mean, just so good. If I were you I wouldn't bother reading the rest of the email, because nothing else beats this.
Holograms, AR, and VR incorporated into exhibitions
New tech, 3-D holograms preserve Holocaust survivor stories “Fritzshall is one of 13 Holocaust survivors who tell their stories through holographic images that invite the audience to ask questions, creating what feels like a live conversation”. From the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, just outside Chicago.
Exhibiting Paintings in Augmented Reality: “Still & Art” at the Clyfford Still Museum “For the new exhibition Still & Art, the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver combines the display of Still’s artworks with digital reproductions of other artists’ works using augmented reality”.
How Tate and HTC Vive recreated Modigliani’s studio in VR “Created by VR studio Preloaded in partnership with HTC Vive, the short, seated experience comes towards the end of the exhibition, letting visitors plonk themselves in a replica of Modigliani’s studio, setting off audio commentary by peering at letters, artworks and empty bottles of rum”.
Notes from conferences
Ideas from MuseumNext x Tech Berlin Conference "What are the technology news from museums across Europe? How are museums using tech in a way that inspires new and existing audiences? How can digital tools help us measure what we do offline? These were just a few of the interesting questions bouncing around the MuseumNext x Tech conference in Berlin this October". From the V&A’s Eva Liparova.
A couple of things from the AMT Lab team at Carnegie Mellon - National Arts Marketing Project: Insights from the Conference Floor and Reflections on the NAMP Conference.
MCN2017 and the Museum <-> Museum Gap - Matthew Lincoln, PhD "MCN and the musetech community still doesn’t seem ready to dive into the weeds about growing a community of practice for building digital services and infrastructure that crosses institutional boundaries".
SMK’s adventures in open access
The Magic That Happens When Designers Get Open Access to Art - Shapeways Magazine “We partnered with the SMK to invite the Shapeways design community to create new pieces of jewelry based on six artworks selected by SMK curators. One winner and four runners up would be featured in the SMK itself, and other entries would be featured in SMK’s online shop”.
Danish art takes Netflix – SMK Open “Are you one of the fans of the new Netflix miniseries Alias Grace, adapted from Margaret Atwood’s bestselling 1996 novel? Some of us at SMK Open are following the series closely, not just because the story is compelling, but because our public domain collection is a key source to the scenography in several of the houses where Grace’s destiny unfolds”.
New creative tools that could spell trouble
Why these faces are not ‘real’ “A pair of algorithms which work together to generate photorealistic faces has been developed by Nvidia”. which reminded me of the Radiolab episode Breaking News where “Simon Adler takes us down a technological rabbit hole of strangely contorted faces and words made out of thin air”.
Some future-gazing
Museum 2040 “The goal of this issue of the magazine is to help you investigate one of many possible futures and think about how our organizations might respond”.
Will Future Storytelling Include Live Theatre? “That’s what I was wondering when I took the Staten Island Ferry to attend this year’s Future of StoryTelling Festival in New York, an annual TED-like long weekend with hundreds of exhibits, performances, panels, and talks largely focusing on the intersection of art and cutting-edge technology”.
What does the future hold for curators? “We're pleased to publish The 21st-Century Curator, our report into the evolving role of the UK curator and their needs for the future”.
A bunch of other things I found interesting, presented without context

Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at the Royal Opera House, Art UK, Scottish Ballet, Royal College of Music, and more.
That's all for now. Oh, and we made it to 100 newsletters! Well there’s a thing.
Please share the good links around and spread the joy. I should be back again next week, medical emergencies notwithstanding.

The Library is a treasure trove of arts/digital info. It was meant to have launched by now but a slight delay means the pre-launch mega-deal is still available. This really is the last chance to grab that though. Find out more about The Library.
