Cultural Digital newsletter #106
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week we've got interviews, selfies, podcasts and, inevitably, VR. Plus a few extra things.
Moving Creates Vortices and Vortices Create Movement is an installation by teamLab and it's at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne until mid-April.
Interviews and talks
art insiders x artland is a series of interviews with "five Berlin-based women that work on the intersection of art and digital technology".
Digital Works #4: getting stuff done. A round-up of December's event (with slides) featuring people from the Barbican, Royal Albert Hall, English National Opera, and Shakespeare’s Globe. Lots of talk of team structures, tools, and workflows.
Art Basel hosted a discussion about Digital Museums and Virtual Audiences that you can watch. Which leads us neatly on to…
VR
When the Headset Comes Off: VR at Museums in 2017 is a general round-up of where things are at.
Acute Art is apparently "the world’s first virtual reality arts platform, a museum without walls that lets you experience the cutting edge of interactive art anywhere in the world". Turns out this launched last year with works from Jeff Koons, Olafur Eliasson, and Marina Abramovic.
Somewhat related from Eurogamer. Kinect was amazing - in a museum. "The best day with Kinect I ever had, I had at the Barbican in London, stood before two pieces of installation art". I wonder if there'll be an article like this written about VR in a few years.
Selfies
The latest version of Google's Arts & Culture app has a selfie match feature. You can only access it in the US from what I can tell, but here's Buzzfeed's take on it.
Meanwhile, Selfie Snap is from the National Portrait Gallery. Pick an emotion, get a portrait.
Podcasts
Broadway Is Becoming More Accessible, Thanks to a Boost From Podcasting. "A recent partnership between podcast leader Audible and Broadway theaters are helping make The Great White Way more accessible for everyone".
Create Hub have made a list of the best art podcasts.
Other stuff
The Information Commissioner's Office have published General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) FAQs for charities.
Looking forward, looking back. Lynda Kelly's list of 2017 wrap-ups and 2018 trends.
Sydney Opera House are running a Digital Mentoring Program. Which is "an opportunity for artists to extend their practice and audience into the digital space by producing a piece of video content that is an accompaniment to their existing performance work or practice".
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at the Science Museum Group, Natural History Museum, Wellcome Collection, English National Opera, National Trust, Royal Academy of Arts, Manchester International Festival, and Trinity Laban.
Thanks for reading and for telling other people about this email. I can tell you've been doing that because loads of people have signed up recently despite me doing very little to promote it. So thanks!
Have an excellent week
