Cultural Digital newsletter #118
Cultural Digital
Hello
Well, this week's email subject line wrote itself. We also have dance, AR, and some apps and games you can play with. Let's start with the dancing…
D-brane is "the story of a creation outgrowing its creator. The performance is the culmination of dance, real time projection mapping and live audio synthesis".
I Predict Innovation's Next Wave Will Come From Dance. So says Jorie Goins, pointing at some more examples of dance/tech crossovers.
The thicc boi
'Absolute unit' of a ram skyrockets museum to internet fame. You may well have seen this tweet and the reaction to it. Of course, Adam (the person behind the account) has previous form - there was the mousetrap saga and the year of being sassy on social media at the Bodleian (his words, not mine).
I liked AV Club's speculation that "Somewhere, a single tear cuts through the soil-smudged cheek of a kindly Reading farmer. On the internet, meanwhile, there is great joy, and many thicc bois". Makes you think…
Augmented Reality
Hacking the Heist. "On March 18th, 1990 thieves broke into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole several invaluable masterpieces. 28 years later, the frames remain empty. Using the magic of augmented reality, the stolen art returns back to its rightful home". I just read that back and realised the first comma is confusing.
Internet Artists Invaded the MoMA With a Guerrilla Augmented Reality Exhibit "Hello, we're from the internet" is an art project that took over the MoMA's Jackson Pollock room without permission".
Weird Type is an iOS app from Zach Lieberman. "Have you ever wanted to draw with words? Weird Type is an AR app that lets you paint with text in space!"
Other things
Sketch Machine was created by Casey REAS with help from GIPHY. You can click things and make patterns.
How the internet is reshaping World Heritage and our experience of it. "My recent research investigates online forms of participation with the Sydney Opera House. Combining digital ethnography and data analytics enables us to better understand the social value of architectural icons and the implications for World Heritage." This from Cristina Garduño Freeman.
Neural Network Dreaming of Landscape Paintings for 10 Minutes is by Robbie Barrat and is very watchable.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at Art UK, Royal College of Music, Philharmonia Orchestra, the Natural History Museum, Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Museum of London, and the Roundhouse.
Those are your links for this week. Please do pass on the good stuff to others.
Catch you next time
