Cultural Digital newsletter #120
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week! Digital teams, Culture is Digital revisited, and a choir. We've also got various forms of nonsense - let's start with this…
VVVR is a "meditation on vocal VR technology". There's possibly something thoughtful going on here, but at the same time it's people making funny noises. What's not to love?
Digital teams
Structuring for digital success. A little while back I kept mentioning a survey looking at how digital teams are structured and resourced. Remember that? Well, the report is now out and it makes for interesting reading.
Back to Culture is Digital
The dust has settled after the launch of this and there seems to have been a fair bit of grumbling about how it turned out. "More of the same but with a more urgent look on their faces" was how one person put it. A couple of the people who worked on the report have been writing things…
Re: Culture is Digital Jane Finnis popped up on the Museum Computer Group email list with some illuminating comments. "Does it go far enough? No. Does it talk too much about cutting edge tech? Yes. But, it also highlights the need for digital skills and literacies across the sector and champions the need to consider the needs of audiences more carefully. Both are huge issues that need to be tackled".
Is culture digital? I'll be honest, this one's a mixed bag, but if you can get past the buzzword-stuffing and occasional nonsense (starting with that title, and what's with the Iraq war terminology?) then there are some observations worth thinking about here.
Other things
I've just discovered Choir! Choir! Choir!, a weekly drop-in singalong session in Toronto, and am fascinated. They're also my favourite new arts/digital case study for more reasons than I have space to write about here.
One by One is a "collaborative project exploring and developing digital literacy in museums".
Soundscape is a "smart looping tool, that syncs your loops with music by other people around the world automatically".
CyArk's Journey To Preserve Our Shared Heritage. Following the recent Google Arts & Culture tie-up,
"CyArk’s CEO John Ristevski reflects on what they’ve achieved in the last 15 years".
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at Art UK, Kew Gardens, Underbelly, RAF Museum, Philharmonia Orchestra, National Museums Scotland, the Roundhouse and more.
And there we are for another week. Share the good stuff with your colleagues and loved ones, please. Until next time.
