Cultural Digital newsletter #121
Cultural Digital
Hello
Bet you were starting to think this email was never going to arrive. This week we have strategy, a few New York-related things, dancing snails, and talking books. First up, in the 'wow, that looks good' slot, we have…
Hype Cycle is a series of "futurist films exploring human-machine collaboration through performance and emerging technologies". The image below is from the second in the series - Hype Cycle: Machine Learning and asks "When will machines achieve human agility?"
While we're on the subject, here's some more 'dance' for you. Slow Pixel is a ballet performed entirely by LED-wielding snails and Dances of 1374 Drones holds the world record for most coordinated flying things (shame about the overly fussy camerawork).
Museums and digital strategy
The Museum Experience as Digital First — Strategic approaches to content, conversation and audience engagement. From Kajsa Hartig. "This talk is about identifying specific challenges that come with a Digital First perspective on museum experiences".
Museums in the Digital Age: insights from Wellcome Collection. Tom Scott, Head of Digital Engagement at London’s Wellcome Collection, sharing "his thoughts on digital strategy and the contribution of open data to a knowledgeable and creative society".
About making websites
The World Doesn’t Need Another Website. The American Alliance of Museums have rebuilt their website and written this quite in-depth and terribly-titled piece about the thinking behind it.
Developing a learning resources website for teachers. The Science Museum Group on what they've learned about publishing their learning resources online.
Other things
A couple of articles about how the Internet has changed things in music:
Charts: The Hot List: The Rise and Fall of the Singles Chart, and
Career-ending reviews: When Critics Could Kill
Although it's interesting to compare that last one to the world of cinema, where there's plenty of griping about what a bad Rotten Tomatoes score will do to your ticket sales.
New York Transfer Announced For Dennis Kelly’s Girls & Boys. This is interesting for our purposes because Audible are involved - they'll be releasing it as an audio play.
New York Today: The Future of Playbill. "Over the course of a few weeks, we got a backstage look into the making of Playbill — the unmistakable, yellow-bannered magazine for theatergoers — and the transition of the 134-year-old New York institution to the mobile-first, social media-obsessed age".
What the Mona Lisa Tells Us About Art in the Instagram Era. "In the presence of the “Mona Lisa” at the Louvre in Paris, digital photography, rather than looking at the painting, has become the primary experience".
Talk to Books. Another Google thing. Ask a question and you'll get a snippet of a book back containing a plausible answer.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at the Natural History Museum, London Library, Underbelly, Tate, Royal Museums Greenwich, Almeida Theatre, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and more.
There we go. All done. Share stuff! Subscribe if you haven't! I'll catch you again next week.
