Cultural Digital newsletter #124
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week we have post-digital art schools, Patreon, and Portuguese. Plus a little-known EU Regulation.
All We’d Ever Need Is One Another is a "mixed-media installation which creates images autonomously through self-generating techniques". It's very clever and you can go see it in Montreal if you like.
GDPR. Too soon?
I know, I know. But here's a round-up of a few things.
Bloomberg said Tech Is Getting EU Privacy Rules All Wrong but called out Kiln Theatre for doing it right. The Royal Court is better than the Economist and Southwark Playhouse's copywriters did well too.
Culture Republic talked about GDPR, anonymisation and rural postcodes. MK Gallery put up a whole new GDPR subdomain (which sounds more dramatic than it is - they're mid-website rebuild). It looks like it all got a bit too much for Creative United.
A rabbit hole
I was reading this report from the Creative Producers International First Digital Lab on the Playable City site. It mentioned that "In order to explore our own methods of digital collaboration, we have designed a digital strand to Creative Producers International, in collaboration with Professor Fred Deakin, UAL Chair of Interactive Digital Art".
It turns out that Fred Deakin & Charlotte Web wrote this paper on Discovering the Post-Digital Art School (PDF). And yes, that's Fred of Lemon Jelly fame.
Then I discovered Modual:Kickstarter, which is a partnership between UAL, Kickstarter, Glasgow School of Art, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Other things
The Royal Institution is using Patreon to fund their excellent videos.
Share your thoughts on the digital literacy needs of museum people. I mentioned One by One the other week. They're on to phase 2 now and have two quick questions for anyone currently working in UK museums or with "good experience or understanding of their needs".
O twitter na #EuropeanaTech. A round-up of day 1 of the EuropeanaTech Conference via the medium of tweets.
Art Institute of Chicago uses data to make exhibit choices. "Measuring Wi-Fi usage throughout the museum revealed that visitors spent more time in the room containing the Degas exhibit than they would have had that room not contained a special exhibit".
The Zium Museum is a museum exploration game. I've had a link to this kicking around for ages now but haven't tried it out, so I don't know if it's any good.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at Cog Design, Parliamentary Archives, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
And we're done. Thank you all for reading along, sending me nice messages from time to time, and for recommending this to others.
