Cultural Digital newsletter #135
Cultural Digital
Hello
As much as possible, I try to include things from all over the place. This week we happen to have Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Nigeria, the UK, and the US all represented. Not bad.
African Digital Art. "Our focus is on artistic work or practice that utilizes digital technology as an essential part of the creative, presentation or distribution process". This is great - lots of interesting rabbit holes to disappear down. I could've picked pretty much anything, but here's Lekan Jeyifo's 'Shanty Mega Structures'.
Digital collections
Open Access Ahead. "at the end of the month, to coincide with a new symposium called “M+ Matters: Art and Design in the Digital Realm,” we will begin publishing M+ Collections data as open data".
Visualising the Royal Photographic Society collection. Olivia Vane on getting started with visualising a new digital collection.
Hacking the online archive. A write-up of a Cogapp hackday with data from Kew and the National Archive.
Canada corner
The new hub for data in culture: culture, business and research working together. "The purpose of the Hub is to provide expertise and training to Quebec’s cultural enterprises, helping them benefit from the many possibilities opened up by advances in data science and analysis".
Collections Management in Canadian Museums: 2016 Results. From a survey to "gain a better understanding of the current realities in collections documentation and digitization in Canadian museums".
Other things
The MCN Conference Schedule is now online, for all who are going or (like me) keeping an occasional eye on the tweets.
For Disney Theatrical, video fuels the Broadway star. "Andrew Flatt, who oversees marketing for Disney’s live entertainment, explains how video and social media have become more vital ways to fill theater seats".
Why surrealist art is a perfect application for augmented reality. Focusing on the Magritte exhibition at SFMOMA.
GET ME IN! and Seatwave are shutting down. "All we want is you, the fan, to be able to safely buy tickets to the events you love". Ticketmaster are all about love.
Exploring the Andy Warhol Museum's Tech Treasures. "Geeks should start with the Amiga gallery, which houses Warhol's Amiga Commodore 1000. But the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh has plenty of other tech-centric treasures".
P-rouette is a 3D-printed ballet shoe designed to reduce pain felt by the dancer. "Bezalel Academy of Art and Design graduate Hadar Neeman has created personalised ballet shoes using 3D-printing technology to reduce dancer's pain".
Historic Tale Construction Kit. Ever needed to create your own Bayeux Tapestry-alike? Well, you're in luck.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at Art UK, Royal Academy of Arts, Sage Gateshead, Manchester International Festival, and the British Museum.
Thanks for reading and a big thank you to those who share these emails with others (you know who you are). Catch you next week.
