Cultural Digital newsletter #150
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week we have music, social/content, and 3D things like this…
Photo Wake-Up: 3D Character Animation from a Single Photo. Given a single photo as input, this method creates "a 3D animatable version of the subject, which can now walk towards the viewer". Crazy. Definitely watch the short demo video.
More 3D things
Adventures in 3D Scanning: A Cast Court for the Digital Age. The first of two blog posts from the V&A. This one discusses "why we undertook this project, and the second will discuss the practicalities of scanning such a complicated group of objects".
Point Cloud Demo: Natural History Museum, London. You can upload point cloud data to Sketchfab. This is quite the demo.
Social/content
A practical guide for making a journalistic approach to digital content work. A follow up to the Wellcome strategy piece. "If you are interested in implementing an editorial strategy like ours for your organisation, here’s the inside view of what’s involved".
Tackling Holocaust denial with Reddit “Ask Me Anything” project. Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day, We Are Social partnered with the National Holocaust Centre and Museum and Green Cave People.
Audience Diversity Starts at home. The Donmar Warehouse talking about looking for the social media accounts potential audiences like to follow and why. "This has enabled us to develop our targeted advertising and find informed groups of influencers who we can reach out to about new productions".
The Movement: Developing new audiences for dance. Some digital and social media initiatives tested by Sadler's Wells: "a social media influencers programme called Social Movers; an extension of our Get Into Dance scheme, creating Ambassadors for a Dance Writes programme; and a live stream of Ballet British Columbia’s post-show talk to all the tour venues".
Music
“With Nicky” - What It’s All About! Nicola Benedetti is publishing "a new online series of educational videos called “With Nicky” that intends to provide information, guidance, and support for young musicians throughout their musical and personal development".
How we're designing musical instruments with the help of disabled musicians and VR. The Performance without Barriers research group is based out of the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast. They design digital musical interfaces with disabled musicians in mind.
Semi-Conductor by Google Creative Lab. You are commanded to "Conduct your own orchestra in the browser by moving your arms". Or else, presumably.
Misc
How do we define creativity? The Science Weekly podcast on "why artwork produced using artificial intelligence is forcing us to look at how we define creativity".
Digital Engagement at the Brooklyn Museum. An interview with Sara Devine, Director of Visitor Experience.
Touring virtual museum set to spread nature knowledge across Egypt. Another example of VR technology being toured around.
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at the Royal Academy of Music, Mayflower Theatre, Luton Culture, and One Further (yep, you could work with me).
If you liked anything in this email, then please share it with others. I'll catch you next time.
