Cultural Digital newsletter #160
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week there are links from lots of people I've included links from in the past. It's also really museum-heavy. I try to maintain a balance, but museum folk just seem to write about what they do more often.
Snapchat vs. Art Museum. Each time a new filter comes out, someone (in this case Dheera Venkatraman) goes and points it at the paintings and sculptures in their local museum, and the rest of us are grateful for their efforts. Here's the latest in the genre.
Interactives
Data-led design: Measuring visitor interaction with digital interactives. Adam Coulson at National Museums Scotland says that:
Location and positioning is key
Visitors respond more to content which is explicitly related to objects/images in their eye line
Aim for simplicity: Less is more
Art Museums and Technology Developing New Metrics to Measure Visitor Engagement. From the Cleveland Museum of Art, some info about a "two-year project to examine new ways of measuring the impact of these digital interactives in art museums". Plus a toolkit.
Collections
Redesigning the V&A’s collections online. Kati Price at the V&A giving an intro to their project to "create a seamless experience across collections information and content, to enable users to discover, research, and make from our collections".
Discovering an object in a collection of millions. Alex Charlton's made one of those Chrome extensions that picks an object at random (this time from the V&A's collection).
Museums in the digital space — some reflections on online exhibitions. "What do you think about the term “digital exhibition” or “online exhibition”?" asked Kajsa Hartig. Here's a summary of the replies.
Making Digital Research available to a new generation. "I’ve read all about millennials, and I’ve learnt that they are used to interacting with digital resources in a way that differs from my generation". Lots to learn in this.
Miscellaneous
How To Measure Ghosts. "Culture industries - TV, Film, Games, Music, Radio, Books and more - are defined by one thing - metrics. But who decides what metrics to use? Join me as I trace the odd, hidden histories of the way we measure audiences". A newsletter from Matt Locke.
The Spektrix Insights Report 2019. "Bringing together data analysis on over 25 million transactions across 343 organisations".
American Artist’s Ally AI Is a Satirical Siri to Check White People’s Biases. Created by Rashida Richardson, director of policy research at AI Now, and American Artist.
#AMaGA2019 – Keir Winesmith. These references from a recent talk make for a good reading list (in case you've not got enough to get through already).
'Quite an adventure': some lessons from digital arts projects with older people. "How the use of digital technology in five arts projects impacted on older people, creative engagement, business models, partnerships, and attitudes towards ageing".
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at the House of Lords, National Theatre, Imperial War Museum. London Symphony Orchestra and others.
Thanks for reading, and I'll catch you next time.
