#176 - Astounding
Cultural Digital
Hello
This week we've got a bumper selection of online collections links, some AI stuff, and the usual grab bag of other items.
For some really very good gif-ing, I highly recommend checking out Agustin Vidal Saavedra's portfolio.
AI
And the Grammy goes to… AI. Shelly Palmer on the ways that AI is, or will be, involved in music production and consumption.
AI as a Tool in the Arts. Case studies include Wayne McGregor, Bill T. Jones, AICAN, and Clip Studio.
The Mechanical Muse. "Machines are learning to write poetry. How should artificial intelligence alter our appreciation of art?"
Bengler: Deep Learning at the Museum. "We’re starting a new project with the Norwegian National Museum looking at how machine learning and deep neural networks can be applied to their collections".
Startups raise millions to make unsettling AI avatars. "Startups are creating unsettling human-like avatars to take over customer service jobs—or even act as a stand-in for celebrities".
Collections online - bumper special
Meet the Institutions now on Unsplash. "By sharing a selection of their archives on the platform, they are instantly connected to an audience of over 300 million people a month ready to engage with their content".
China's museums offer online exhibitions amid coronavirus outbreak. "the government body said they would "encourage cultural heritage museums and institutions around the country to utilize existing digital resources and launch online exhibitions".
The First Anniversary of CMA Open Access: Benefiting People Now and Forever. "we wanted to highlight the engagement we’ve seen, the analytics we’ve collected, and the outcomes we’ve experienced".
Opening up to the world — developing the image policy of the Pinacoteca di Brera. Apparently it's more liberal than most Italian museums. This interview with Marco Toscano, Communication Manager at the Brera, is about "how the policy was conceived and what its impact has been".
Towards a National Collection Opening UK Heritage to the World Pre-call Announcement. "It is anticipated that each project will be funded at approximately £3 million (80 per cent fEC) for a period of up to 42 months, with up to five projects being funded and the total funding envelope for all Discovery projects not exceeding £15m".
Miscellaneous
The way you dance is unique, and computers can tell it's you. "our dance style is almost always the same, regardless of the type of music, and a computer can identify the dancer with astounding accuracy".
How will MIDI 2.0 change music?
How KLAUS Was Rendered. "a quick summary of how the film Klaus was lit and colored based on research and a few clips demonstrating the technology used". Lovely film, that.
Plugged In, Powered Up. The National Archives have a new digital capacity building strategy. "an ambitious plan of programmes, training and resources to support the archives sector meet its digital ambitions".
Jobs
There are digital-related jobs available at Art UK and the Young Vic.
Fin. Please pass the good stuff on to others. I'll be back with more before you know it.
